Through a series of volunteer events and tree plantings in 2018, 2019, and 2020 the non-profit Canopy installed 1 acre of urban green sites and planted 166 trees – including 117 native oak saplings across East Palo Alto, California. Once the saplings and other plantings reach maturity they will provide an estimated 6.2 acres of tree canopy within the urban matrix of this San Francisco Bay Area neighborhood. In addition to urban matrix benefits, 2020 plantings enhanced the quality of a 7.8-acre patch. Of all species planted during this 3-year project, 79% are California natives. Between 2018 and 2020 there were 20 planting and greening workdays which engaged 1,082 local volunteers from MLK Day event turnout, school groups, and charitable organizations. A grant from CalFire supported Oak planting.
