Nature Ways

Existing habitat patches and corridors can be enhanced with habitat restoration and creative planting, as in the Nature Ways initiative in Singapore. Nature Ways are selected streets between existing habitat patches which are planted with a palette of trees, shrubs, and understory based on the native forest ecosystem. This is accomplished by interspersing native forest tree species in between the existing street trees and adding small trees, shrubs, and flowering plants in new planting areas at the street level. The plantings are planned to create at least four levels of forest structure (shrub, understory, canopy and emergent layers) which enhance habitat diversity, connect existing patches and facilitate movement of a greater variety of species.
